Late 2019 I was diagnosed with Costochondritis. I was on medical leave from work and in unending pain every waking moment for months. Because of my inability to dress, feed, or bathe myself, I filled my time with new video games to get my consciousness out of my body. Jedi: Fallen Order was the first game where I intensely engaged with a photo mode; now that I couldn't do photography it filled a void in my life. These tools keep getting better and I honestly see no reason 3D environments can't be a new and upcoming genre of learning arenas for photography and art. With tools like DOF, Focus, Contrast, Midpoints, Rule of 3, Highlights, Saturation, Grain, Vignette, Filters, Subject Modeling, and more - there's no reason you can't learn photography fundamentals in a 3D rendered environment. On the PS5 Photo mode, Demon's Souls (2020) was the second game I explored this way. I spent extensive time looking at architecture and level design. The tools in this particular game for photo mode were impressive and ranged; I hope this trend continues as a new staple. Photo modes haven't been this fun since Halo 3 Theater Mode (2007). You wouldn't believe the architecture intricacies of game designers, who has the B.A? Now that photo modes are coming back in style I hope to have more titles to show how indeed, video games are and art of the most engaging of complexity.
